Hopkins - MBA Trivia: Heart Transplant

A US man, David Bennett, 57, has become the first person in the world to get a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig. The surgery is done by doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Currently 6000 people die every year in the US waiting for a transplant, with more than 100,000 reportedly on the waiting list. The pig used in the transplant had been genetically modified to knock out several genes that would have led to the organ being rejected by Mr Bennett's body. Doctors watch closely the patient to make sure the organ to be well.

This groundbreaking procedure offers hope to hundreds of thousands of patients with failing organs.
